How to Tell the Difference Between Gold-Plated, Gold-Filled, Pure Gold
Share
There are three main types of gold jewelry items available on the US market_ gold-plated, gold-filled, and 14-18k gold. We carry mainly gold-plated jewelry and accessory items. We are going to show you how to tell the difference between gold-plated, gold-filled, and gold pieces using a magnet.
The higher the metal content, the stronger the magnetic field, meaning less gold content. In this video, you can see that the gold-plated chains have a stronger magnetic field than the 12K gold-filled pendant. However, there is no magnetic field with the 22-24K gold chain necklace (aka Asian gold) because it’s almost pure gold.
This is an easy trick you can use to identify gold-plated, gold-filled, and gold pieces by using a magnet. Just remember - the higher the metal content = the stronger the magnetic field = less gold.
